INFO1001: Final Project Guidelines

The final project for this course consists of researching, evaluating, and presenting information on a topic of your choice and will consist of the following items:

Choosing a Research Topic

For this project you are free to choose your own topic, although I do require that you pick a subject that is debatable (though not necessarily controversial) and that your paper reflects your personal position on the issue. I suggest picking a topic that interests you personally and/or that you already know something about. If you are having difficulty finding something to write try looking through a newspaper or magazine for current events, or talking to family and friends about issues of interest to them. If all else fails, I can provide some suggestions for you.

A large part of choosing a topic is finding something that is not too broad in scope. Since you will be writing a paper that will only be 4 to 5 pages in length, you may need to take a topic of interest to you and whittle it down to something manageable. Some examples:

TOO BROAD: Mapping the human genome has many implications for health and science.
REVISED
: Although scientists can now detect genetic predisposition to specific diseases, not everyone should be tested for these diseases.

TOO BROAD: What impact is the Internet making on the business world?
REVISED: How has email affected white-collar productivity in the American workplace?
